SPIRIT OF THE WILD EXHIBITION - STAVANGER 2008 |
The ‘Spirit of the Wild’ Exhibition is visiting Stavanger, Norway from 26 June to 28 September 2008.
The free, outdoor exhibition is arranged in Byparken, the City Park located by the Breiavatnet Lake and the Cathedral, with incredible views of the Stavanger skyline. The 100 giant photographs can be seen 24 hours a day, with floodlighting at night, making the exhibition accessible to everyone visiting and living in the city. Stavanger was awarded the 2008 European Capital of Culture, along with Liverpool, and therefore this is an extremely exciting time to be involved in this artistic and cultural revival.
There is an information centre with a free film featuring Steve at work, and a shop set up alongside the exhibition is selling ‘Spirit of the Wild’ posters, postcards, greetings cards, books and calendars.
The exhibition is presented in partnership with Noreco and Stavanger Kommune, and curated by Co+Life.

ELEPHANT! - In this joyous celebration, with photographs from the wildest outreaches of Botswana to the teeming cities of India, there are many surprises. The photographs include aerial shots from helicopters, the drama of battle between angry males, tender interaction between mothers and calves, the rich decorations of the elephants of India and astonishing shots of the elephant under water. If the eye is the window of the soul, then Steve Bloom looks straight into the eye of the elephant, delving deep into its psyche with his hauntingly beautiful images. Here is the ultimate book on the elephant, as intimate a photographic journey into the animal kingdom as has ever been made.

SPIRIT OF THE WILD – Steve Bloom’s goal has been to search for the spirit of the world’s wildlife: the tiger’s eyes gleaming in the jungles of India; polar bear cubs seeing the world for the first time; the few mountain gorillas left in Africa. The result is a perpetual dance for the eye, the embodiment of nature’s choreography, an intimate exploration which reveals not only the animals but much that is new to us about ourselves. Accompanied by his own commentaries, as passionate as they are informed, and thought-provoking quotes from legendary figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Gerald Durrell and Emily Dickinson, Spirit of the Wild brings to the fore the common experiences of all living beings.

SWIMMING ELEPHANT |
Elephants swimming in an azure blue sea are a most unusual sight. Early this year Steve visited a remote Island chain in the Bay of Bengal where he was fortunate to capture wonderful photographs of these large creatures underwater. Elephants used for logging on the Islands were occasionally taught to swim in the sea, in order to cross from one island to another.

TRIBAL AFRICA |
Africa has a wonderfully rich diversity of cultures and peoples. The Omo delta in south-eastern Ethiopia is an area where the way of life remains largely untouched by the 21st century, and local tribes each have their own unique customs and rituals. Body adornment can be extreme, such as in the case of the Mursi women who insert a clay lip plate, up to 7 inches (16cm) in diameter, in their lower lip. Decorative scarification, and bodies painted with white or ochre clay, are combined with ornate beadwork and striking headdresses.
A selection of Steve's Tribal Africa images, which we are still adding to, can be seen at http://www.stevebloom.com/pages/animals/40.html |

INDIA REVISITED |
Steve returned to India in March and April 2005 and attended the colourful Elephant festival in Jaipur, where elephants are paraded in all their finery, and intricately painted by their mahouts, with startling patterns such as this tiger. He also spent time at the ghats along the river banks at Varanasi, where he witnessed devout Hindus bathing in the holy waters of the ganges, and the funeral pyres of the cremation sites.
